Why Are They Voting for Kerry?
by Lee Wilson
I've lost sleep over the current attitudes of some people in the United States of America because I believe we have crossed a line that is not good for our free and compassionate society. It's called partisan politics.

You see, I believe this president is one that we could have all rallied around. I believe his character and integrity is such that if people really gave him a chance, he'd go down in history as a very beloved president. I believe the reason that John Kerry even has a chance in this election is because people aren't basing their votes on what they believe is best for America. Many people aren't even voting on what they think makes sense because most of those who support John Kerry can't be sure where he stands on the issues due to his constant flip-flops.

So why are they voting for John Kerry?

According to the polls, about half of John Kerry's supporters say their vote is really a vote against Bush rather than for John Kerry. But why? What about this president has some people so angry at him that they would vote for anyone else who campaigned against him while others, such as me, thank God for his leadership and can't imagine why even the most partisan Democrat would cast a vote for John Kerry.

The first thing I don't understand, is why some Americans dislike President Bush. Now, I understand that sometimes people just rub others the wrong way and I also understand that some people will vote on a candidate based on how their parents or spouses plans to vote. But other than those two possibilities that comprise a very small amount of John Kerry supporters, what causes the animosity towards President Bush?

For those who believe that he was wrong to go to war in Iraq, that's their right. I would, however, like for them to honestly consider three points pertaining to that matter.

1. If President Bush had said we needed to send thousands of troops to Afghanistan to take out Al Qaeda and the Taliban before September 11, 2001, would those voters have supported that action? You see, before the attacks on the World-Trade Centers, President Clinton said that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and would use them. In fact, John Kerry, John McCain, and other members of the United States Senate wrote a letter to President Clinton demanding that he take military action against Saddam. So the idea that Saddam Hussein posed a threat was nothing new and was not just in the mind of President Bush. It certainly made sense at the time that removing him from power could prevent another 9/11-type of attack.

2. If these people are voting for John Kerry because they are opposed to the Iraq position of President Bush, they aren't exactly voting that opposition. John Kerry voted for going to war with Iraq and, as he has admitted in the debates, he had the same information concerning Saddam's weapons program as President Bush. Kerry didn't become an anti-war candidate until he was losing to Howard Dean in the Democratic primaries. Even after that, he has changed his position many times and could even do so again. Take a look at some of his comments on Iraq:

''Those who doubted whether Iraq or the world would be better off without Saddam Hussein and who believe today that we are not safer with his capture don't have the judgment to be president or the credibility to be elected.''

--John Kerry, New York Times, December 17, 2003

''[W]ithout question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime ... '' --John Kerry, Jan. 23. 2003

I don't know about you, but I'd like to ask John Kerry what exactly he thought we needed to disarm Saddam, since he now criticizes President Bush for taking action because, according to Kerry, Saddam had no Weapons of Mass Destruction.

I think it's also important to quote two of Kerry's fellow Democrats concerning this inability to be consistent on this issue:

''When it was popular to be a Massachusetts liberal, his voting record was that. When it was popular to be for the Iraq war, he was for it. Now it's popular to be against it, and he's against it."
Jay Carson, a Howard Dean campaign spokesman.

''From John Kerry, they [terrorists] get a 'yes/no/maybe' bowl of mush that can only encourage our enemies and confuse our friends.'' Zell Miller (Democrat-GA), 2004

3. An even more confusing change in Kerry's position on Iraq comes on the subject of Weapons of Mass Destruction themselves. Did you know that John Kerry said on August 9, 2004, that he would have gone to war with Iraq if he were president even if he knew that there were no WMDs? But he apparently changed his mind prior to an August 15 interview when he said that he would not have gone to war with Iraq if he were president and knew there were no WMDs. Perhaps that is the "yes/no/maybe bowl of mush" that his fellow Democrat Zell Miller described.

Of All Possible Candidates for Democrats, Why Him?

It's shocking to me that John Kerry would be picked by any party as its candidate for the White House. What is it about John Kerry that inspires pride or confidence? He says something to one crowd and then says the exact opposite a week later to another crowd. Does anyone want that in a president?

Furthermore, during this time of war, when America is receiving threats from madmen who crash planes into buildings and blow themselves up in order to kill Americans, do voters want someone in office who has been praised by enemies of America for helping them win a war against us?

Let me explain: Most of us know that John Kerry came back from Vietnam and said that American soldiers were committing war crimes. He joined the hippies and militants in protesting the war. No one disagrees that this happened, not even John Kerry. In fact, Kerry later said that his use of the words ''murder'' and ''atrocity'' to describe his fellow soldiers was ''inaccurate.'' So he admitted that he lied about it. However, what many Americans don't know is that in the Vietnamese Communist War Remnants Museum (formerly known as the ''War Crimes Museum'') in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), a picture of John Kerry hangs in a room dedicated to the anti-war activists who helped the Vietnamese Communists win the Vietnam War. The photograph shows John Kerry being greeted by the general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Comrade Do Muoi!

So my question is, why in the world would anyone choose this traitor over President Bush? Why would any political party ever want him as its representative? I can't imagine ever voting for a candidate who sided with our enemy, but I am even more disturbed by anyone voting for him to be president during a time of war. He's been on the side of our enemies at least once before, so why would Americans trust him to fight against our enemies now?

The Man for the Job

Under President Bush, taxes have been lowered for everyone who pays them, violent crime has dropped to a 30-year low, the Taliban has been dismantled in Afghanistan, Saddam Hussein has been removed from power, and the economy has bounced back from the financial devastation of 9/11 to create over 1 million jobs in the last 13 months. In addition to that, the president signed the ban on partial-birth abortion, despite John Kerry's vote to keep the brutal procedure.

I ask voters to look into their hearts. Isn't it painfully obvious that John Kerry would not be good for America? In fact, as we look back on his history, I think it's safe to say that he has never been good for America. President Bush, on the other hand, has done lots of good. History will remember him as the president who led America after the attacks of 9/11 to protect ourselves and liberate thousands by taking out the Taliban and Saddam Hussein. This is not an election between too equal candidates. This is an election between a one-time enemy of America and a president who has dedicated his life to protecting America.

If you are a Democrat, this should not be about your ''team'' winning. This isn't a football or baseball game, and an election for the most powerful man on the planet should never be about bragging rights for you and your group. So if you plan to vote for John Kerry, I beg you, in the name of freedom, God, and America, don't! Swallow your pride and vote for Bush. Do it even if you feel you have to keep the vote a secret. Do what is best for the United States, your family, and yourself: vote for George W. Bush
